Restless Bodies Reverberate We

The night is a time of shapeshifting, dreaming, reckoning, rest and release. It can be both a space of ecstatic social connection and intense loneliness. It’s part of our everyday lives, yet its significance in the making of self and world is often overlooked.

How does the night change the quality of our thoughts, conversations and actions?

How does it invite or allow a different side of ourselves to be enacted and shared?

What are we turning over or alchemising through the night?

What does it mean to inhabit or embody the night together?

Restless Bodies Reverberate We is a new project that will explore themes of rest(lessness), yearning, dissatisfaction, social connection and the night-time through sound, performance, writing, arts-based research and a reading group. It draws from my research on darkness and the night, collaborative work on nocturnal intimacies, and my personal experience with troubled sleep, existential dread and an increasing desire to “sound out” my night self.

I’d love you to be involved!

I’m currently gathering reflections for a one-off radio show that will be broadcast in Spring 2025. The show will be part fiction, part essay, part incantation, part listener call-in, and takes inspiration from late night radio talk shows, radio plays, sleeping aids and overheard conversations and sounds from neighbouring rooms.

--- Do you have a night-self that’s distinct from your day-self? Do they ever meet each other?
--- Do you ever feel a sense of freedom or pleasure in the night... when, where, how?
--- If the night is a difficult time for you, what gets you through?
--- Do you use sleeping aids? Tell me about them.
--- Do you feel like your dreams or night-time thoughts have important messages for you?
--- If you’re up in the small hours, is anyone with you? What do hear, see, feel?
--- What desires and longings rise up in the quiet dark?

Send me a voicenote, a written reflection, a sound recording or even an image. You can be as weird or as painfully sincere as you like, though profanities probably won’t be ok for broadcast!

***Please send by February 12th***  via anonymous file upload at this dropbox link. If you know me personally, you’re welcome to whatsapp or email me directly! Info about how files will be used is available to read at this google doc link. Feel free to share this call out with someone you know!
